This comprehensive course is designed to take you through all the basic ceramic skill-sets and clay theory in the space of four weeks.

Perfectly suited for beginners who want to start their journey into the world of ceramics. 
By the end of this course you will have gained a firm understanding of the basic hand-building techniques, surface decoration, glaze theory and technical material theory taught by one of our team of experienced tutors.

  • 4 week course
  • Class duration 2.5-3 hours
  • Once a week (Wednesday night)

PROGRAMME:

  • Brief overview of ceramic history, making techniques and decoration.
  • Learning the most ancient techniques - pinching and coil building.
  • Creating a cereal bowl, vase or pot

Enduring forms
  • Intro to firing of clay - what happens in a kiln and the various types of firings.  
  • Learning the slab-building technique.
  • Creating a sculptural vase.

Making shapes
  • Learning about material - the various types of clays and their chemical and physical properties.
  • Working with plaster moulds and learning to use nerikomi and marbling techniques.
  • Creating cups.

Decorative arts
  • Introduction to various surface decoration techniques.
  • Learning about the use of slips, decals and glazes.
  • Decorating objects from previous classes.
